Best Mattress for Side Sleepers in Billings, MT

If you wake up with a sore shoulder, a sore hip, or a numb arm, your mattress is the first suspect. Side sleeping is the most common sleep position, and yet a lot of beds are not built with side sleepers in mind. The result is people waking up feeling worse than when they went to bed.

If you sleep on your side, here is what to look for and where to find it in Billings.

Why side sleeping is hard on the wrong bed

On your side, your shoulder and hip carry almost all of your weight on two narrow points. If the mattress is too firm, they cannot sink in enough, pressure builds, and you wake up sore or with pins and needles in your arm. If it is too soft, your hips drop too far, your spine curves, and your lower back takes the hit instead.

The goal is a bed that lets the shoulder and hip sink naturally while keeping your spine level from neck to tailbone. Firmness is the biggest variable in getting that right.

The right firmness for side sleepers

This is where most people go wrong. They press on a bed for thirty seconds and buy whatever feels nice standing up. What feels good in a store is not always what feels good after eight hours on your side.

As a rule of thumb, most side sleepers do best on a medium, plush or soft feel. Lighter side sleepers usually want more give at the shoulder and hip. Heavier side sleepers often need a medium or medium-firm bed so the hips do not sink too deep. The most common mistake is going too firm because firm sounds supportive. For side sleepers, that logic works against you. Our firmness guide explains the feel scale we use on every product page.

Mattress types that work for side sleepers

Euro tops and pillow tops

A sewn-in comfort layer on top of a supportive core puts softness exactly where side sleepers need it. Our house line has this at every price, from the Studio Euro Top through the Craftsman Jumbo Pillow Top and the Bungalow Jumbo Pillow Top.

Memory foam and gel foam

Foam follows your shape closely, which gives deep pressure relief at the shoulder and hip. It also absorbs motion well if you share the bed. The Craftsman Gel Euro Top pairs gel-infused foam with a cushioned top for exactly this.

Hybrids

A hybrid puts foam comfort layers over wrapped coils. The coils allow airflow that solid foam cannot, so hybrids are the better choice for side sleepers who run hot. The Loft Soft is the plushest bed we build and a hybrid.

The beds we show side sleepers first

What side sleepers should avoid

  • Firm beds bought because firm sounds supportive. They create pressure points at the shoulder and hip that build over a night.
  • Old innersprings with no comfort layer. If your bed has visible sag or is more than eight years old, it is working against you.
  • Beds that are plush on top with a weak core. The hips sink too far and the spine curves even on a soft surface.

How to test a mattress as a side sleeper

  1. Lie on your side for at least five minutes. Not thirty seconds. Your body needs time to settle and tell you where pressure is building.
  2. Check your shoulder. It should sink in naturally. Pressure on the outside of the shoulder right away means the bed is too firm for you.
  3. Check your hip. It should sink enough to keep your spine level but not so far that your waist drops.
  4. Check your spine. Straight line from neck to tailbone. Any curve means the bed is not the right fit for your weight and position.
  5. Bring your habits. If you sleep with a pillow between your knees or an arm under the pillow, do that in the store.

Frequently asked questions

What firmness is best for side sleepers?

Medium to soft for most people. Heavier side sleepers often do better on medium or medium-firm so the hips stay level. Come in and we will help you find the right point for your body.

Is memory foam or a hybrid better for side sleepers?

Foam gives deeper pressure relief and better motion isolation. A hybrid gives more airflow and a more lifted feel. If you sleep hot, lean hybrid. If pressure relief is the priority, lean foam.

What is the best mattress for side sleepers with shoulder pain?

A plush or medium bed with a cushioned top layer, so the shoulder sinks without building pressure. Test it lying on your side for several minutes before you decide.
